Authentic Thursday
In 1957, the baseball glove manufacturer Rawlings created the Gold Glove Award to commemorate the best field performance at each position. The award is created from a glove made from gold lame’-tanned leather and is affixed to a walnut base. Initially, only one Gold Glove was given to the top fielders of each position in the entire League. Beginning in 1958, separate awards were given for the National and American Leagues.
Al Kaline won 10 Gold Gloves and is one of four outfielders tied for second place with the most Gold Gloves. Kaline played his entire 22-year career with the Detroit Tigers. Most of his career was played in the outfield – mainly in right field where he was known for his strong throwing arm. In 1966, when he earned his ninth Gold Glove, he posted an impressive .983 fielding percentage.
Kaline’s number 6 was retired by the Tigers on August 17, 1980, making him the first Tiger to have his number retired. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame the same year. A larger-than-life bronze sculpture of Al Kaline making a catch can be found at Comerica Park.
